OVERVIEW

Happiness Coach is a digital wellness solution designed to bring gamified mental health support into the workplace.

I was responsible for the research and designing the product from the ground up.

Note : Although the product was eventually discontinued, this case study showcases my end to end contribution in research, design, and product development—and the key learnings I carried forward.

INITIAL FINDINGS

Employees want support, but stigma and friction prevent engagement.

Many employees hesitate to seek help due to privacy concerns and social stigma.

HR teams struggle with a lack of real-time, actionable insights into workforce well-being.

Existing wellness initiatives often feel generic and top-down, resulting in low participation and impact.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Happiness Coach needed to feel fun and engaging—breaking away from the generic, one size fits all wellness initiatives employees were used to.

We needed inspiration beyond a blank screen, and that meant my job was to painstakingly download and try all these other gamified quiz apps to understand the features and experiences they offer.

COURSES

Designing courses & challenges with a life coach

I collaborated with a life coach provided by the client, to create chapter-based wellness journeys — each chapter lasting 5–6 weeks with daily challenges and reflection prompts. From there, I built wireframes to shape these ideas into an engaging, achievable product experience.

PIVOT

The client pivoted from the original " mobile app " concept and decided to build a " web app " instead.

Along with a few minor tweaks, the biggest shift was moving to a web app approach. This required me to rework the wireframes and flows, carefully rethinking what was possible—and what wasn’t.

USERS

There are three key types of users for Happiness Coach

HR / Manager

Receive anonymized data and insights to monitor stress levels and overall well-being across teams or departments. They can take proactive steps to create healthier work environments while protecting individual employee privacy.

Employee

Participate in weekly courses that include daily challenges and reflective questions. These activities help them build healthier habits while encouraging personal growth and self-reflection.

Life Coaches

Provided by Happiness Coach, they design or adapt courses as needed and are available to conduct one-on-one calls with employees for additional support.

CONCLUSION

What would I do differently if I started over?

RESEARCH

I realized how essential it is to dedicate time to research before moving into design. A stronger foundation of user insights can shape better decisions and reduce rework later.

BE FLEXIBLE

No two projects are the same. Each comes with its own challenges, and adapting the process along the way is key to building solutions that actually work.

CREATE A SYSTEM

Creating a design system early on helps maintain consistency across components, streamlines collaboration.
